C is for Certain (Secondary)

Identify the problem with a Certain Certainty

In these changing times, we can feel unsure, unsettled by everything that’s happening, or not. We can feel uncertain about the future & this uncertainty can make us feel anxious or stressed. To help us find our way through these changes, you can ask yourself:

Deal with Uncertainty

The way to approach this is to think specifically about what is causing you to feel this way.

1. What are the things that I’m uncertain of? What are the things that I can be certain of? Compare the two lists & remind yourself that, despite these changing times, there are still lots of concrete facts that we can trust, that we can be certain of. Perhaps ask someone else what they’re unsure of or certain of too, who might you ask?

2. Remind yourself that you’re not alone. We’re all finding these times difficult. And we’re all getting through them together, one week at a time, one day at a time, one moment at a time. None of us knows what the future holds but we do know what’s happening right here, right now

3. We can train our brains so that, over time, they become more used to change, they become more resilient. Do the Ice-Cube challenge! Hold an ice cube in your hand, notice the discomfort, the melting. If this feels too difficult, pop the ice cube down for a bit and try again. Notice how this feels, how the ice cube changes, whether we like it or not, how our hand feels! What are our thoughts? Notice how sensations, thoughts & feelings come and go, they don’t stay. Notice how nothing is permanent, everything changes

Manage your approach

By continuing to stay focused on the things we can see in-front of us and understanding what we can and cannot influence we can grow our confidence to cope when things are less than certain.

Remember that when we find things difficult, uncertain, we strengthen our abilities to focus and, over time and with practice, we can show ourselves that we can get through uncertainty and difficult times.
