V is for Value (Secondary)
value and worth… are two totally different things
When times are tough, it’s our values that can help get us through. Our capacity to cope with the ups & downs of life is often strengthened by the values that we hold dear, the things that bring us back to centre, our very own North Star if you like!
For some, this pandemic has offered an opportunity to re-evaluate what’s important to them, for others, what’s important is still emerging, still developing.
1. When we have a purpose in life, research tells us we can cope better with difficulties, are healthier & more resilient. First up, interview your family about how they found their own purpose in life! Ask your granny what’s most important to her, chat with your mum or dad about their long-term goals, ask your extended family what they care about!
2. Use the ‘house’ practice to understand what your own core values might be -
what are the foundations of your house - the things most important to you?
what are the things that lead you to your house - things you believe in?
what’s in the garden of your house - what are the things you want to grow & cultivate in your life?
just like the roof of your house keeps you safe, what keeps you inside your house, what might be limiting you?
3. Imagine yourself in the future, what do you see for yourself? Imagine your lives in two, five, ten or twenty-five years time what are the things that you want to change in the world, how will you do that?
FINAL TAKE
Somewhere deep down, we know what’s important to us, we know what we value but we might just not be living our lives in line with our values
