T is for Talk (Primary)

The brainy bit!

For us humans, talking is really important, it’s one of our main ways to communicate with each other.

let’s have a chat :)

We talk ALL the time! Sometimes in busy families, everyone talks all at once! When we’re excited we might talk really quickly. Sometimes when it’s super quiet, we might even be able to hear ourselves think, our own inner self-talk!

Fun things to practice

So how we can help develop our resilience by talking, here’s some ideas:

1. How do you talk to your friends? Sometimes we are really supportive of our friends & much harder on ourselves! Or sometimes we might blurt something out to our friends without first thinking it through . Play the Hello Game to help us focus and connect!

• sit opposite your friend

• look into each other’s eyes - try not to giggle (ps this is impossible )

• notice the colour of each other’s eyes

• say hello to each other, make eye contact & tell your friend the colour that their eyes look

• continue the game with more talking! What’s your favourite superpower? What are you thinking? What can you hear? Practice talking & listening, tuning into your friends, waiting for them to speak, talking when it’s your turn, see how you get on!

2. When you’re angry or upset, sometimes it can really help to talk to someone. Perhaps this is your family or your friends or perhaps one of your teachers? Talking about how we’re feeling to someone that we trust can be really important in helping us feel connected & strong. It can also help us feel connected, and a good reminder that we’re not the only ones who find things difficult from time to time

3. Let’s notice what it’s like when we can’t talk when we spend time in silence! Play the 1-minute game by sitting, with your eyes closed and working out how long a minute takes to pass. When you think the time is up, keep your eyes closed and put your hand up. Let’s see how you feel about not talking and how good you are at guessing time!
